The year of the Euromillions records in Spain and Great Britain

2009 was a record year for single winnings at the Euromillions. On May 8 2009, a 25-year-old Spaniard – with lucky numbers 4, 23, 24, 29, 31 as well as lucky star 8 and lucky 9 – won a cool 126,231,764 euros. That was the biggest jackpot ever won by a single person with a ticket in Europe. In draw number 300 on November 6th, two winners hit the jackpot of more than € 102 million. Both winnings went to Great Britain.

One half of the jackpots went to a gambling community from Liverpool named Magnificent Seven, the other half went to Les Scadding (53) and Samantha Peachey in Newport with just under 51.1 million euros - that is almost 45.6 pounds (38). That concerned the largest lottery winnings ever to be paid out in the United Kingdom, and the gambling community consisting of seven IT-specialists had just formed four months before the win. Les Scadding needed the millions even more. The unemployed mechanic had previously been forced to overdraw his bank account.
